GPT 5.6 Sol vs Fable 5: A Hands-On Comparison of Two Frontier AI Models

OpenAI has finally released the GPT 5.6 family — Sol, Terra, and Luna — and the launch benchmarks look almost too good to be true. According to the marketing charts, Sol not only outperforms Opus 4.8 and Fable 5 on the headline evaluations, it does so at a fraction of the cost. Benchmarks, though, only tell part of the story. What matters is how a model behaves when it is actually driving your day-to-day work: writing code inside an agent harness, one-shotting API calls, refactoring your codebase at 2 a.m., and making judgment calls when the prompt is intentionally ambiguous.

This article is the result of a full day of side-by-side testing between GPT 5.6 Sol (via Codex) and Fable 5 (via Claude Code), plus a large batch of quick single-shot API comparisons. The goal is not to reproduce the benchmark tables — it is to give you a practical, evidence-based answer to the only question that matters: which model should you use, for what, and when?

The Lineup: What Are We Actually Comparing?

Before we get into the results, a quick recap of the models on the table:

  • GPT 5.6 Sol — the flagship variant of OpenAI's new 5.6 line. Sol sits alongside two smaller siblings, Terra and Luna, which target lower cost and lower latency respectively. Sol is positioned as OpenAI's most capable everyday model.
  • Fable 5 — Anthropic's current generation frontier model. Marketed as their most capable reasoning and coding model, priced accordingly.
  • Opus 4.8 — the previous flagship from Anthropic, used here as a familiar reference point.
  • GPT 5.5 — the outgoing OpenAI flagship, mentioned for tier comparison.

An important framing note up front: Sol is priced at roughly the same tier as Opus 4.8, not Fable 5. That fact quietly shapes almost every conclusion in this article. Sol is not really trying to be a Fable 5 killer — it is trying to be the best model at its price point. That distinction matters a lot when you interpret the results.

Agentic Experiment 1: Build a Playable Open-World Bike Game

The first experiment was a head-to-head agentic build. Both models received the exact same prompt:

Build a genuinely fun, playable, open-world bike game that runs in the browser. Full creative freedom.

Fable 5 ran inside Claude Code. GPT 5.6 Sol ran inside Codex.

The Output

Sol produced a top-down, bird's-eye-view city with working controls (WASD, space to bunny hop, Q/E for tricks, shift for boost). Collisions were handled, coins were collectible, and tricks fired correctly in the air. Functionally it worked — but the camera felt cramped and the world felt small.

Fable 5 produced something markedly different: a 3D, near-first-person open-world scene that felt closer in spirit to a driving-through-a-city sandbox. The map felt bigger, the physics on ramps had more character, and the overall "feel" was closer to a real game rather than a working prototype.

If you had to pick which one you would rather play, Fable 5 was the clear winner.

The Cost

Where things get interesting is the receipt:

Sol was ~3× cheaper, spent ~65% fewer output tokens, and produced a functional playable prototype. Fable 5 spent significantly more of everything and produced a noticeably better game. This becomes a recurring theme: Sol delivers something that works; Fable 5 delivers something that impresses.

Agentic Experiment 2: The Scroll-Stopping Website

The second prompt was intentionally open-ended:

Build the most impressive, interactive, scroll-stopping website you can imagine.

Both models delivered a scroll-driven, 3D, sound-enabled narrative site. Fable 5 built a "10 billion years" cosmic journey — clouds giving way to the Big Bang, first light, stellar collapse, supernova, and finally arriving at "you". The mouse-reactive backgrounds, sound design, and pacing genuinely produced a wow moment.

Sol built a piece called "Vesper Archive" with a very similar structural approach: an interactive 3D background, scroll-triggered narrative, ambient audio. It was competent and pleasant. It was not on the same level.

This is where the economics get genuinely uncomfortable to think about. Fable's output was better — but was it 20× better? Almost certainly not. If you gave Sol a longer budget and let it iterate until it had spent as much as Fable, the answer might have been much closer. But out of the box, on a single run, Fable produced the more memorable artifact.

Agentic Experiment 3: Five Fundamentally Different Visual Elements

The third prompt was designed to stress the model's taste and diversity:

Design me five fundamentally different visual elements. They can be games, presentations, websites, simulations — whatever you want.

Each model produced a gallery with five sister projects.

Fable 5's gallery ("Five Self-Contained Worlds"):

  1. Singularity — an abstract space-time interactive.
  2. Terra — a mouse-steered flight simulator with time-of-day changes.
  3. Orbit — an arcade coin/dodge game (with a menu-overlay bug).
  4. Inkflow — a generative art doodle tool.
  5. The Descent — a scroll-driven underwater journey with changing pressure, temperature, and light.

Sol's gallery ("Impossible Objects — Five Tiny Worlds, No Frameworks"):

  1. Aurora Orchestra — an aurora borealis synthesizer (some panels broke mid-play).
  2. Atlas of Lost Echoes — an exploration map collecting five hidden "echoes".
  3. The Glyph Heist — a typing/anti-typing minigame.
  4. A five-slide presentation deck — visually the strongest artifact of the set.

Both galleries were interesting; both had bugs. Sol's set felt more thematically diverse — an audio toy, an exploration map, a typing game, a slide deck, and a simulation are genuinely five different categories. Fable's set was polished per item but leaned heavily on "scroll-driven interactive experience" as a shared idiom.

Winner: Sol, narrowly, for showing more range on a deliberately ambiguous brief.

The API Head-to-Head: 27 Quick One-Shot Tasks

Agentic loops with harnesses are one workload. The other workload — arguably the one most developers actually pay for — is short, mostly stateless API calls: "here's a snippet, tell me what's wrong," "summarize this," "convert this," "write me this function." To test that mode, both models were run over the raw API on a batch of 27 quick, single-shot tasks.

At first glance this looks like a blowout for Sol. Read the second row again: when Fable 5 actually returned an answer, the two models were nearly identical in quality. Sol won on the scoreboard largely because Fable 5 refused a meaningful number of prompts — its safety and refusal guardrails are tuned aggressively, and on borderline requests it simply declined to answer.

So the honest reading is:

  • On quality when answering: Sol ≈ Fable 5.
  • On willingness to answer: Sol >> Fable 5.
  • On cost: Sol ≈ 25% of Fable 5.

For short, low-stakes tasks where the ceiling is not "genius reasoning" but "reliably produce a competent answer", Sol dominates on unit economics without giving up much quality.

Token Efficiency

Sol's price advantage is not just a per-token discount — the model is also more token-efficient in absolute terms. On both input and output, Sol consistently uses roughly half the tokens of Fable 5 for equivalent tasks. Even if the two models were priced identically per token, Sol would still come out meaningfully cheaper. Some of this is likely the Codex harness, which has historically been leaner than Claude Code, and some of it is the model itself.

That split is interesting: Sol's typical response is quicker, but its worst-case responses are noticeably longer, dragging the average up. Fable 5 is more consistent — it lives around the ~20 second mark and rarely surprises you in either direction. In agentic builds, Fable 5 was almost always slower overall.

If your product care is p50 latency, Sol wins. If you care about p99 predictability, Fable 5 wins.

Cost: The Uncomfortable Chart

Aggregating across the agentic builds and the API run, a clear picture emerges:

  • On raw API single-shot workloads, Sol was ~$9 vs Fable's ~$14 — roughly 35% cheaper.
  • On agentic, multi-turn, tool-using builds inside Codex vs Claude Code, the gap widened dramatically — often 10–20× cheaper in Sol's favor on a per-task basis.

The lesson: the gap between the two models is small at the API level and enormous at the harness level. Fable 5 spends aggressively inside an agent loop; Sol spends conservatively. Which of those behaviors is "correct" depends entirely on how much you value the marginal quality gained from more exploration.

Personality: How the Two Models Actually Feel

Numbers describe the "what". Working with these models all day teaches you the "how". After a full day of hands-on use, a consistent pattern emerged.

Fable 5 feels like a manager or co-founder

Fable 5 pushes back. It will read a request, decide it disagrees with part of your approach, and tell you so before it starts working. It behaves like a consultant, not an intern. That is often exactly what you want — you get a second opinion baked into your workflow, and the final artifact tends to be more thoughtful. It is also occasionally annoying: sometimes you want the thing done, not re-negotiated.

Where Fable 5 shines:

  • Pure capability on hard problems.
  • Creative writing and brainstorming.
  • Strategic advice and product judgment.
  • Complex reasoning across long contexts.
  • Avoiding over-engineering — it writes fewer speculative tests and less scaffolding.
  • Video-length creative output where taste matters more than throughput.

Sol feels like an exceptionally strong worker

Sol reads your instruction, follows it, and ships. It does not editorialize. It is faster, cheaper, more consistent, and more literal.

Where Sol shines:

  • Price — not close.
  • Computer use and tool calling — noticeably more reliable in a harness.
  • Playing devil's advocate on your own code — Sol is careful about edge cases and bugs.
  • Verification and test-writing — it will happily generate a lot of tests (sometimes too many).
  • Speed at typical (median) latency.
  • Executing well-defined tasks at scale.

The cleanest mental model: Fable 5 is a great manager. Sol is a great worker. The dream setup is Fable 5 orchestrating a fleet of Sol agents.

Where Does Sol Really Sit in the Model Hierarchy?

The most honest reading of the day of testing:

Sol is a clear step up from GPT 5.5. It is roughly on par with Opus 4.8. It is not on Fable 5's level for the hardest reasoning and creative tasks — and honestly, if it were, OpenAI would price it accordingly. The fact that Sol sits at the Opus-4.8 price point is itself a strong signal about how OpenAI internally ranks it.

Which raises the more interesting question: why is it called 5.6 and not 6? Fable jumped a full version to reach 5. If Sol were truly a generational step above Opus 4.8 or GPT 5.5, calling it 5.6 would be an odd act of self-restraint. The naming implies OpenAI is holding back a bigger model — the true head-to-head against Fable 5 is probably not Sol; it is whatever ships as GPT 6.

Practical Recommendations: Which Model, When?

Distilled from the experiments:

Reach for Fable 5 when:

  • The task is open-ended and taste-driven (creative sites, presentations, story-shaped artifacts).
  • You need strategic reasoning, product advice, or long-form writing.
  • The quality ceiling matters more than cost — one-shot, high-stakes work.
  • You want a model that will challenge your framing before executing.
  • You are the "co-founder" and you need a "co-founder" back.

Reach for GPT 5.6 Sol when:

  • The task is well-defined and you want it shipped.
  • You are running an agent loop and cost/tokens matter.
  • You need computer use, tool calling, or careful verification.
  • You want low median latency for interactive UX.
  • The workload is high-volume, moderate-difficulty, and price-sensitive.
  • You need something that reliably answers rather than refuses.

A very rough allocation rule: if the task's difficulty is a 5/10, don't send it to a 10/10 model. Sol at 6/10 is the right tool. Reserve Fable 5 for the 8/10-and-above tasks where the marginal quality is worth the marginal cost.

The Meta-Lesson: Benchmarks Are Not the Product

If you had judged this launch purely from the benchmark charts, you would have concluded that Sol beats Fable 5 outright. If you judged it purely from the agentic build quality, you would have concluded that Fable 5 is on a different planet. Both readings are incomplete.

The real story is a portfolio story: Sol and Fable 5 are complementary tools with different personalities, price points, and comparative advantages. Sol wins on unit economics, computer use, and consistent execution. Fable 5 wins on ceiling capability, creative taste, and strategic reasoning. The right answer for most teams is not "which one" — it is "both, routed intelligently."

For now, the practical playbook is simple: default to Sol for volume and execution, escalate to Fable 5 for the moments that actually matter, and keep an eye on the release notes. The next real fight in this weight class is not GPT 5.6 versus Fable 5. It is whatever OpenAI is quietly holding back for GPT 6.
